Blues on the Fox

23 years ago a seemingly simple music festival began. It honored the historic 1930s blues recordings that took place at the Leland Hotel in Downtown Aurora. Few could have guessed those recordings would spawn a blues festival that’s brought thousands and thousands of music lovers to Aurora, and like those blues legends decades ago, it just keeps getting better and better year after year. Celebrate the blues with the one and only Blues on the Fox.

Friday, June 14

Gates: 6 p.m. Tickets: $20

Ana Popovic: 7 p.m.

When you see Ana Popovic play, you might be too stunned to cheer. This woman is a powerhouse performer who uses her guitar so effortlessly it might as well be an extra limb. Extraordinarily talented and a breath of fresh of air in the blues world, Ana will own RiverEdge Park when she takes the stage.

Taj Mahal Quartet: 9 p.m.

A blues legend in his own right, Taj Mahal has been playing venues large and small for the past 50 years. Using traditional country blues as a starting place, Mahal perfumes the pot by mixing a spicy concoction of Afrocentric roots music, a blues gumbo kissed by reggae, Latin, R&B, Cajun, Caribbean rhythms, gospel, West African folk, jazz, calypso, and Hawaiian slack key. The savory dish he serves is both a satisfying and uplifting stew that actually transforms ‘singin’ the blues’ into something to be very happy about.

Saturday, June 15

Gates: 2 p.m. Tickets: $20

Jamiah Rogers: 3 p.m.

You’re going to want to say you were there before Jamiah Rogers becomes a blues superstar, because that’s where he’s heading. Jamiah and his band is one of the hottest acts in the midwest and a Chicago favorite. Playing since he was three years old with his dad, Jamiah is now electrifying audiences across the country.

Ronnie Baker Brooks: 5 p.m.

A ferocious blues player, Ronnie Baker Brooks is a Chicago-born musician who’s been on stage since the age of 9. Decades later and he’s still on stage, only now he’s considered “unrelenting,” a “monster guitarist” and “blues royalty.”

Coco Montoya: 7 p.m.

A honest-to-God show-stopper with a hard-edged sound and style all his own, Montoya mixes his forceful, melodic guitar playing and passionate vocals with memorable songs, delivering the blues’ hardest truths. He earned his status as a master guitarist and soul-powered vocalist through years of rockin’ the blues with a guitar that cuts straight to the heart of the matter.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band: 9 p.m.

If even Eric Clapton is mimicking your style, you know you’re doing something right. And Robert Randolph does it by fusing rock, funk, soul, jazz and the jam band scene into his own miraculous sound. Robert Randolph didn’t even hear the sounds of blues until he was out of his teens due to only knowing music from church. That’s fitting since Robert Randolph has a sound that can only be described as a gift from God.
